WHAT IS COUNSELLING?

Counselling is a talking therapy which people usually seek when they want to change something in their lives. Counselling can help you to understand yourself, your thoughts, feelings and behaviours in greater depth, as-well as exploring issues from your past.

We all face difficulties in our lives from time to time and we may struggle with how to cope, we are human after all. During your counselling session we can explore coping strategies and ways of looking at things from a different perspective to support you in the process.

The relationship between the counsellor and client is key which is why I offer a consultation, so you can see if I am the right counsellor for you at this moment in time.

What happens during the 15 minute telephone consultation?

During the consultation I will ask you a few questions about what has brought you to counselling, if you’ve ever had counselling before and what you would like to gain from our sessions. This will help me to understand what we will be working towards and how I can help. You will also have the opportunity to ask me questions.

What happens during your first Counselling session?

We will go through the contract to ensure you understand the agreement and you will have the opportunity to ask any questions.  I will explain boundaries and confidentiality and we will also talk about what has brought you to counselling and what your goals/desired outcomes may be. Each session we will build on our therapeutic relationship, I will listen and support you throughout your sessions and I’ll help you to understand on a deeper level why you feel the way you do.

It’s important to remember that you don’t have to talk about anything that you don’t want to, this is your process and you can take your time.

How sessions work

Counselling sessions are usually weekly or fortnightly at the same time to promote consistancy. However I can be flexible with sessions if I have availability. Face to face sessions take place in Ashton on Mersey, Sale, Manchester. I do also offer sessions online via Zoom.

I will book you in initially for 6 sessions but this is reviewed throughout our work together and you can decide if you want to end or continue with your sessions. Some clients may only require a few sessions, whilst others may benefit from long term support. I will be guided by you and we can work out a number of sessions and when you wish to attend, to meet your needs.

How will I feel after my session?

Each client will experience different things after their counselling session as each client is unique. You might feel relieved or happy to have shared something that has been bothering you for so long. You may also feel exhausted/overwhelmed if you have found the session difficult. Counselling can bring up deep rooted feelings and it might be hard at times, it’s important to share how you feel so I can support you in the process.
